In April 2020 I will be renting a car in Florence to travel throughout Tuscany. Originally my plan was to drop off the car in Orvieto and use the train to travel to Sorrento. That seems to be a bit involved with a variety of connections in need of being made. So I am considering driving to Sorrento and then dropping off my rental. Any thought(s) or experienced recommendation(s) would be highly appreciated. (I know about needing an international driver's license.)
I've driven most of that route recently and it's straightforward. About 4 hours and 25 Euro in tolls. I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't drive. However, be mindful of the office hours at your drop-off.
Good suggestion.
Read this about driving in Italy and restrictions involved [ZTLs]; avoid leaving anything of value in a car when parked:
Great warning about office hours. A lot of car rental places, esp. in smaller towns, close for a loooooong lunch break.
It’s mostly freeway driving. Driving times vary depending on where in Tuscany you start from but 5+ hours is a decent estimate.
If you google the name of the rental company (Europcar, Hertz, Avis, or whatever) + Sorrento, you will get the office address and operating hours. Rental Offices generally close by 7:30 or 8pm.
Hertz reopens at 2pm in the afternoon, Europcar at 4pm.
