We will be traveling to Italy next March and April. Holy Week and the week after. We keep getting cautioned not to be in Rome that week. Is it just the crouds or do sites close down that week? Would we be ok to home base in Rome but travel outside Rome that week and see Rome the following week.
I would say that being in Italy for Holy Week is a real treat and should NOT be missed. A few years ago I was in Sorrento for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday and then bus to Rome on Easter Day. -------------
Everything was open regular hours and yes there were crowds watching and participating in the processions along the streets. I took many photos and enjoyed everything.
I think being in a Catholic city during Holy Week is a great experience, regardless of your faith. I haven't been to Rome during that time but am sure it is exciting and crowded. I have been in Antigua, Guatemala during Holy Week and the traditions, etc. are amazing.
I was there the week after Holy Week this year and no issues, except the crowds were light.
