Before you book that tour of Nero's Golden House (Domus Aurea)...

Still here in Italy and did the Colosseum, the Forum, and Nero's House yesterday. Couple of tips to consider:

Colosseum - Incredible - but get the Roma pass before you get there. The line was atrocious, but we walked right by it.

Forum - This is by far the most underrated sight in Rome. Never before have ruins brought goosebumps to my skin. Plan on spending several hours (we spent half the day) in here as well as Palatine Hill. Bring Rick's Rome 2008 book and forgo the audio tour. Rick has everything there for you already.

Nero's Golden House - This one was bittersweet. My wife and I love history so we were both really looking forward to this. You MUST have a reservation or they will turn you away at the door. Actually, more to the point, the archeologist that happens to have "Tour Duty" will turn you away as this is a working site. The ENTIRE 35 minute tour is in Italian; the guides do not speak English. Also, the tour only shows you about 1/100th of the actual ruins. Don't get me wrong - it was extremely interesting and I have no regrets doing it. But the reservations websites fail to tell you that the tour is in Italian so it can be a waste of money if you're not really into history.

Kent (or Rick) - maybe that should be mentioned in future editions of Rick's Rome guide? We used www.pierreci.it to book the Nero reservations. Maybe other websites are more informative.

Lesson of the day - pay attention to those around you. As we were leaving the Forum, we decided to sit for a small break. We ended up sitting next to David Caruso (the main character in CSI Miami)! He was vacationing in Rome with his daughter, Greta. It was a pleasant surprise and he was super nice!

More details from the field to follow!

Ticketclic.it web site shows 2 English tours a day to Nero's. I was going to book one for the end of June. Maybe I need to look into this before booking. Thanks for the info.

Derik - What time was the tour you took? We are seriously considering this tour (Thanks; we hadn't heard of it until now!)

The front page lists 2 English tours:

10.02 Guided Tour Italian

11.22 Guided Tour Italian

12.03 Guided Tour Italian

12.41 Guided Tour English

13.21 Guided Tour Italian

14.01 Guided Tour English

15.21 Guided Tour Italian

But, once you select a date and try to purchase tickets, it lists 4 English tours (they added 2 tours to the day), at least for 6/26:

INGRESSO VISITA - ITALIANO 10:02

INGRESSO VISITA - ITALIANO 10:42

TICKET - GUIDED TOUR ENGLISH 11:22

INGRESSO VISITA - ITALIANO 12:03

TICKET - GUIDED TOUR ENGLISH 12:41

INGRESSO VISITA - ITALIANO 13:21

TICKET - GUIDED TOUR ENGLISH 14:01

INGRESSO VISITA - ITALIANO 14:42

TICKET - GUIDED TOUR ENGLISH 15:21

You need to book/request a time slot in English at Nero's Golden House if you want the guide to English. This is your mistake, not the guide book or the booking site. Many people take the tour in Italian just to get in as the English tours sell out quickly.

My wife and I were there in September 2007 and took the English speaking tour of Nero,s Golden House. We had made the reservation a couple of months ahead time. The tour which while only being about 25 minutes in duration we did enjoy it.

We took the opening tour at around 10:00 am if I can recall. Again, we used the www.pierreci.it site to book the tour. I'm sure other websites offer English tours - or I just didn't see it offered. Not blaming anyone - just wanted to give folks the heads up. I'd do the tour again in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the heads up, Derik. We are going to take the 15:21 tour in just a few days. It was the pierreci.it website that had the different languages listed, so either you did miss it or they changed it since you booked. Either way, thanks again.

Our group of 20 took the English tour 1 week ago. We had done the tour several years ago. This time the tour was just a waste of time and money compared to what it used to be. I really can't recommend it.
