beds in night train from venice to rome - need clarification

Folks
I am traveling with my wife from venice to rome on the night train.
I was lost with the whole terminology for night beds.
We need 2 sleepers on the train for the night.
I saw the following options: which is the one where both can sleep in the same compartment on two beds/berths?

when i selected 3 bed compartment it asked for Men or Women? Can we not sleep in the same compartment? ( i assume each compartment is 6 beds - 3 on each side)

any website which explains this mystery??

Seats
Couchettes
2 bed compartment
3 bed compartment
Double seat compartment
Special seat compartment
Single seat compartment
Excelsior singolo
Excelsior doppio
Excelsior singolo con lettino
Excelsior doppio con lettino
Excelsior matrimoniale

Thanks,

A night train from venice to rome. Well, you won't be sleeping very long as the whole trip will be tops 51/2 6 hrs. why spend the money for a couchette?

Actually, a trip on the Eurostar in the afternoon is 4.5hrs. Mark is correct about the short duration. However, the night train leaving Venezia Santa Lucia at 8:42pm takes 9.5hrs. Plus, it has a train change in Vicenza with a 1:15hr layover there. It's the Vicenza/Rome leg that has the sleepers. The next night train leaves just after midnight.

I agree again with Mark here. Why would you want to get a sleeper for such a short journey? You won't save much money (if any) over a hotel in Rome. Also, you won't get much sleep. This is certainly not a good value.

As to part of your question, sleeper compartments can be mixed or women only. There are 2-bed compartments on both of the night trains mentioned above. If you get a mixed 3-bed compartment, you can expect a stranger to share it with you.

Well we plan to get some sleep before our 18 hr flight the next day. So even a few hrs of lying flat would help! We want to take the non stop leaving after midnight and arrive in rome at 7 am.

So i should pick the 2 bed sleeper...with mixed option...

Couchettes have either four or six bunks and can be booked as either mixed or female only. Sleepers are one sex only--unless you book the whole compartment. So if you and your wife want to be in the same sleeper, you'll have to book a two-bed one.

its probably too late to note that you can fly back to San Diego from Venice just as easily as from Rome...so if you are traveling all the way to Rome just to catch a flight...see if you can change travel arrangements to leave from Marco Polo (typically through Frankfurt or Munich where you will change planes for a non-stop back to LA (and maybe even SD)
