Forgive my paranoia, but are bedbugs a problem in Italy's hotels? Is there anything you can recommend that I can take to avoid returning with some unwelcome bugs? Thanks.

Check your mattress for black specks in the crevices and streaks that look like pen marks (smeared bedbugs). If you find them, insist on another room. Keep your luggage elevated off the floor on a chair or luggage rack. Bedbugs like to hide in dark places such as under baseboards and in the crevices of furniture. I would be more worried about getting them from visiting NYC than Italy.
