Bed size

We are booked on the RS tour mid Oct Venice - Rome. Venice hotel is Pensione Guerrato, Rome hotel is Hotel Aberdeen. We have booked additional nights on both ends. What size bed can we expect at Italian hotels. The description says a double room but not bed size. Hoping they mean at least a Queen size bed as we Americans are used to. An American double size bed is not found in our hotels. We are used to a King bed but a Queen is ok.

Beds in Italy are generally large, much larger than in France for example.
They are between 1,80m and 2,00m large.

An American 'queen size', in my experience in Italy, is more the exception, not the norm

I stayed at Pensione Guerrato years ago. I do not recall exact details about the bed size, but I highly doubt you will get anything like a "queen" size bed in most RS accommodations in Italy. I would expect the beds to be comfortable and adequate, but not queen size. Calibrate your expectations. It'll be OK.

Enter the name of each hotel in TripAdvisor, and there are several travelers’ photos where you can see the beds and also the rest of the hotel room accommodations. Sometimes a “double”may be two twin beds side-by-side. When it’s a couple, they will sometimes make the sheets into one cohesive bed.

You could make contact with the hotels and ask directly the exact measurements of their beds.

"An American double size bed is not found in our hotels. "

But it is often found in hotels in Europe. There is much more variation, in many things, in European hotels compared with US ones.

I agree that if bed size is important to you, e-mail them directly and ask for measurements. Do the same with any other amenity you want or need - don't assume it will be there. If the website doesn't specifically mention it, ask the hotel directly, to avoid disappointment.

Some hotels in the U.S. will have a double or two doubles, so it’s not unheard of, it’s just not as common as 1 king or 2 queens. I’ve stayed at the Aberdeen in a one-bed room but apologize that I cannot recall if it was a queen or double. It was one of the smaller rooms in the back that faced the inner courtyard.

I would go into this open-minded as possible expecting smaller rooms and smaller beds than you’re used to. But I agree—look at photos or call/email the hotels to ask.

I've stayed at Pensione Gueratto four times over the past few years and have never seen any beds other than twins. Quite likely a "double" bed there will be two twins pushed with shared blankets. They are lovely folks there, and in my experience respond to emails in a timely fashion. I suggest that you email or call them directly for the most useful answers to your questions.

If you look closely at the photos on their websites, you'll see that the beds in their double rooms are generally two twin beds pushed together. The Italian term for this is matrimoniale and it's at least as wide as a queen.
