Am looking for a small, more personal experience in the older section of Rome (near Pantheon, Trevi,...) rather than the train terminal. Has anyone stayed in a bed and breakfast you would recommend? Or perhaps a smaller hotel? Mary
Not exactly where you want to be, but it is reputable and I know the owners B&B Little Italy. very good transportation from here and IMHO close enough to walk many places. Also with a good reputation is The Nicolas Inn. I also hear good things about Hotel Smeraldo.
Another vote for Nicolas Inn.
See RonInRome for suggestions on accommodations. His website covers Rome better than any other I've seen. I agree that around the Pantheon is a good place.
My best suggestion is to quickly figure out how to use public transportation above and below the ground level to save your feet and legs. You can walk yourself to death in Rome.
I've got reservations at the Nicolas Inn for next month.
Brent, have a wonderful time! Thanks for all suggestions. I thought we'd checked on the Nicholas Inn, but we'll definitely doublecheck. Prices are about what we'd be comfortable with.
In October, we stayed at the B & B al Centro. Three very nice and reasonably priced rooms in a great location. Short walk to Piazza Novona, Pantheon and Campo de Fiori. http://www.bbalcentrodiroma.com/eng/
Thank you everyone. We did check with the Nicholas Inn, but they had no rooms during the time in May we'll be there. We'll check back in case of cancellations. Have the Hotel Smeraldo on our list to email. Will also look at both B&Bs, but you're right, we want to be closer to the Pantheon area. Mary
My husband and I are in Rome now. Although not in the area you mention we have been thrilled with our experience at City Life. A B&B near the Termini station (ten minute walk). We have been treated like family and given more personal attention than we could have asked for. Our breakfast is delivered to our room every morning at whatever time we request. Delicious! Rooms are very clean and comfortable. We just cannot say enough good things about our stay here. Mila, who helps run the B&B speaks English if that is a help for anyone. Sorry, I know that is more info. than you requested. Just have had such a wonderful expereience I wanted to share with someone who might be undecided as to where to stay.
It might be a little more than you were planning on spending, but we've stayed several times at Residenza Canali ai Coronari, which is just one block from Piazza Navona on a quiet little side street. It's family-owned, and the people who work there are very pleasant. It's like a B&B, in that you get buzzed in, but with more rooms and 24-hour staff.
I really liked the Boutique Hotel Trevi. It's literally steps from the Trevi fountain. I walked every morning to the Pantheon. Couldn't be more centrally located.
Since you mention you're open to a smaller hotel I would advise Albergo Abruzzi. Right in the same piazza as the Pantheon, and we were able to get a pretty good deal online. It was cheaper because we originally chose to stay in the annex area, but they had vacancy and moved us to the main part of the hotel for free. We very much loved our stay there. It was comfortable, bigger than most European hotel rooms. Great location to walk around. Comes with breakfast in a cafe across the piazza.
