Does anyone have recommendations for beaches near Palermo, Sicily? Are there any private beaches or less crowded beaches?

Mondello is Palermo's beach, or you can take the train to Cefalu.
You could also take the local bus from Palermo and visit the beaches along the Golf of Castellammare (Terrasini, Trappeto, Balastrate, Alcamo Marina, and Castellammare del Golfo (http://www.russoautoservizi.it/orari.html).

Cefalu has nice beaches and it's less than an hour by train from Palermo. Charming town just to stroll around in too.
