My trip is in October and my friend and I want to experience a beach no more than and hour to an hour and a half outside of Florence. I heard the Mediterranean side is better. We also thought about hopping the train to Venice? We are staying at a Villa in San Donato and unsure of transportation yet, as ther are 10 others involved. The group leader is renting a car just for her boyfriend and her and maybe two closed friends. The rest of us are on our own. Any suggestions of beach cities. We will be there one week. Grazie

Actually, the beaches on the Adriatic are much nicer IMHO. They have fine sand, and the Adriatic is warmer. I've been to beaches in Riccioni and Rimini, and they're lovely. Can't remember how far from Venice, sorry.
October may be chilly on both sides.

Thank you for the information from Rosewell. I head much of the same about the Adriatic, though someone wo lived in Sienna for years said the Mediterranean side was warmer and more beautiful. To each his own. We will not be in Venioce, but I will check out both places you mentioned to see how far they are located. Thank you for you help!
