I am thinking about taking a family trip to Italy. One of our stops will be Rome. I would like to get to a beach town east of Rome that we can get to by train. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
East of Rome you won’t find a beach before the Adriatic coast. There are beaches on the Mediterranean. Hopefully someone will way in with a personal experience.
Are you sure you mean east of Rome? Rome sits very close to the west coast of Italy and that makes the most sense. East from Rome you would need to travel to someplace like Pescara which would be 3-4 hours on the train.
Are you thinking of a couple days at the coast or a day visit? Places like Sperlonga and Gaeta are pretty about 2 hours away and popular for a visit but too far for a beach day. The closest beach is Ostia but it is a pretty blue collar beach and may or may not be what you have in mind as an "Italian beach".
You also don't mention the time of your trip. Presumably it will be in beach season and you will competing with all the Italians running to coast so be sure you book early.
Enjoy,

The closest beaches are on the Tyrrhenian Sea, west of Rome.
Ostia lido is the closest (train from Piramide station).
Santa Marinella, a bit more to the north, can be reached by train from Roma Termini station.
Other places require a bit more time and the use of buses.
