Beaches at Fregene-Cecina

We are staying in an apartment in Rome 22 July- leaving 4 Aug.I am traveling with college age son and friend who want to go to the beach to cool off for at least a day.
Anyone know how the beach is at Fregene just north of Rome? Can one take a train to Fregene?
(I looked at Sestri Levante and Monterosso.. but it is so expensive as we are visting the hill towns also.)
Another possibility is to stay in Siena two days, visit Voltarre by bus, and keep going to beach city Cecina one day before taking the train down the coast back to Rome. Do not know anything about the beaches in Cecina or Fregene. Are they pleasant, pretty?

The beaches around Rome are sandy, but the water itself is nothing spetacular, and is often on the dirty side. If you are hoping for crystal waters and white sand you have to head further south. I've actually heard that the water at Fregene is dirtier compared to the others. You can take the train to Ostia, or if you feel like going further and seeing someplace really beautiful I would recommend Sperlonga, which is about 2 hours south of Rome by train.
