Beach Towns Southwestern Sicily

We are beginning to plan our 3 week trip to Sicily, September 2020. We would like 10 day base on the beach with walking access to restaurants, gelato, nice beach. We are looking in the Marina di Ragusa area, but open to other areas. We are hoping for area with nice beach and not too boisterous nightlife. We will be renting beach house/apartment type accommodations. Will have a car for day trips All ideas and recommendations greatly appreciated.

Marina di Ragusa is in southeastern Sicily.

Are you certain you want to spend 10 days in one single location? I believe as you do further research on Sicily, you will learn of more and more interesting sights all over the island. I wonder whether you will be able to cover them all in the course of your remaining 10 or 11 days.

I like the little Baroque towns in southeastern Sicily, but Marina di Ragusa is rather isolated. ViaMichelin estimates the driving time from Marina di Ragusa to Siracusa at nearly 1-3/4 hours, and that doesn't cover stopping, getting lost, or looking for parking. There's enough to do in Siracusa that you might want to spend two days there. Other places often mentioned by travelers to Sicily (including Agrigento, Piazza Armerina, Catania and Taormina) will be even more time-consuming to reach.

We have been to Sicily several times before. We will also spend some time in Catania and Etna where we have not been before (other than just arriving and leaving). We will be Ortigia (returning because we love it) a couple of days. We enjoy basing in an area and taking day trips. We plan on day trips to Noto, Ragusa, Agrigento, Piazza Amerina while enjoy relaxing and being on the beach. We have travelled enough and we have seen and visited many of the major sites, other than what I mentioned, so we enjoying being in a spot for awhile. Our main goal for this trip is to spend time at the beach, but walking distance to restaurants, cafes, gelato and to do day trips to places we have not previously been to. Totally agree Sicily is beautiful with much to see and do. We are used to driving in Sicily and Italy, sometimes a challenge, but if not in big cities not too bad!

Years ago I stayed here at this Agriturismo (converted farmhouse)

Agriturismo Masseria Sul Mare
SS115, Km 391, 600, 96012 Gallina SR, Italy
+39 0931 560101

They served food at all meals. The place had a great beach within walking distance from the various accommodations.
The location served us well as a base for
Siracusa (25 min drive)
Noto (20 min drive)
Ragusa (75 min drive)
Portopalo di Capo Passero (45 min)
Vindicari Natural Reserve and Beach (30 min)

Piazza Armerina and especially Agrigento are probably too far for a day trip, but if you don’t mind 5 hour driving round trip you can do that too.

My cousin in Italy liked to stay in Fontane Bianche one summer. It’s a beach town between the above Agriturismo and Siracusa (less than 10 min from the Agriturismo). He went there in August and it was great, but when I went at the end of May it was kind of dead because it was too soon in the season. The beach looked great however. You might have the same issue in September. Most beach towns that look great in summer become sort of ghost towns during the school year from mid Sept to mid June, except for maybe on weekends when the weather is warm.

On our trip to Agrigento we very well may decide to overnight. Thanks for the tip on the Agritourismo! We are not committed to base in Marina di Ragusa I am checking that whole coast from just south of Agrigento to Pozzallo. We just want a place that has local restaurants, gelato and nice beach. We are older, in our 60s and 70s, we stay in apartments or homes, at time agritourismos and love to enjoy and get into the ebb and flow of a place, enjoy the local food and cook from local ingredients.

I have been in that portion of the coast but never stayed overnight so I can’t help. The coastal area between Agrigento and Capo Passero is not my favorite part of Sicily. It’s very dry and when I’m there I feel like I never left California. The landscape looks the same.
