We are finalizing our itinerary for our trip for early October. We will be there for 15 full days (not counting departure date). We will be traveling with our kids (ages 7, 9, 12) and wanted at least one beach stop to give the kids a break from sight-seeing. Any recommendations for that time of year? We are considering (1) Almafi coast, (2) Cinque Terre and (3) Lake Como. Will the weather be better further south? Cinque Terre and Lake Como would be much easier to get to, but we can make Almafi work too. Spouse and I have been to Cinque Terre, but not to Lake Como or Almafi. For the kids, it's their first time in Italy. Almafi at the added bonus of allowing us to stop in Pompeii.
I would also love any recommendations on where else in our itinerary would be a good place to get a hotel/house with a pool. Our other planned stops are Rome, Venice, Orvieto, Siena (?)/San Gimignano. Do we need a car to reach these hotels/houses -- I suspect they are not in the center of town, so is the train is out?
