Beach needed: Rome, Venice, or Florence

After having 2 kiddos, the hubby and I are heading to Italy in September (1st-10th) for some time alone! We are hitting the big 3 and really would like to spend a day at the beach. We can't make it all the way to the Amalfi Coast, so can anyone suggest a good beach within an hour of the big 3? Thanks so much for your help!

In Venice you can take a water taxi to the Lido and go to one of the public Lido beaches. Or you can stay at one of the hotels on the Lido with a private beach.

The beaches outside of Rome are fantastic! Our kids' favourite day of the Italy trip was spent there ;-) Ostia Lido is close to the airport so it was ideal for us to stay there for the last day before flying back home. It's also close to Ostia Antica so you could do a couple of hours of sightseeing and then rest on the beach.

Just north of Livorno (Leghorn), Tirrenia has a nice beach with those European cabanas. The sand isn't as dazzling white as the Florida Panhandle, but they actually groom it with bulldozers!
