Given the time frame, I think they're limited to southern/ Mediterranean countries like Greece or Turkey to get water that's warm enough to swim in, plus many interesting cultural sties. I'm having a hard time coming up with any other European beaches that are hopping in October (or warm enough to swim in). A 3/4 day trip may not be worth the high price tag (and the overall time spent, not to mention jet lag) just to fly to Europe. If they've never been abroad, they may not realize this. It's not like flying to another city three hours away for a long weekend.

Not quite getting "3/4 day" trip? Do you mean 18 hours? Or is this 3 to 4 day trip? Where are they coming from?

Hi, thanx for your replies, I'm sorry I haven't made myself clear on this but they are coming from Manchester in the UK to Italy, it's 2hrs and 20mins flight.

I can understand that in October that it won't be sunbathing weather so that's a point I will put across to them, so what about culture then? Even gondola s maybe?

The problem is that in 3-4 days they are limited to one location that you can fly into and out of (no driving 4 hours to a smaller village).

Rome has good weather at that time and plenty of culture. There is a beach outside the city but it's not beach weather.

Amalfi coast combined with a day trip to Naples/Pompeii could work.

Not in Italy but Barcelona has a beach right in the city, lots of culture, and a fun vibe.

I'm all for a 3 to 4 day break in Venice. Maybe a warm, sunny afternoon will present itself to go out to Lido, but it would hardly be a "beach" vacation. Venice is not particularly budget friendly. Everything on the islands has to be offloaded from trucks onto delivery boats and finally hand carried to the shops and restaurants. But culture, it has oodles.

If they want to go to Venezia, that's where they should go. They can take a daytrip to Padova, lots of culture, university life as well, they may want to split two nights Venezia, two nights Padova, since on such a short trip packing/unpacking is not much of an issue, and the travel time between cities is only half an hour.

Sicily or Malta are two other options (depending on flights schedules from Manchester) - they both have beaches and culture and are far enough south to be warm. Not as expensive as Venice.
