Bassano del Grappa

Anybody ever been to Bassano del Grappa, about an hour train ride north of Venice? I have been told it's a very pretty town, RS doesn't mention it. I will be in Venice in a couple of weeks and am trying to decide whether to take a day and go there. Worth the journey?

hey hey George B
i'd say go for it. leave early morning on the train, roam around the center and other piazzas, cross bridges, enjoy the architecture, taste grappa at the distillery, have lunch at on of the many restaurants, stop at a pastry shop.

couple years ago saw a show with someone moving to bassano del grappa. the town was so beautiful, not crowded, mountain & town views, the river flowing, the markets, the history.
so nice to take a day away from hustle and bustle to relax and enjoy. stop at a tourist kiosk in a plaza and see what is offered that day.
another place to "rack your brain" is treviso, 30 minute train ride from venice. home of tiramisu and radicchio and near prosecco road.

click destinations, treviso, look at walking tour, 2 1/2 hours to see sights & hidden gems
places if interested, nice to get away from big cities and the crowds to see other places hardly mentioned here. couple years ago we did a private taxi prosecco tour up near this area with our local guide born and raised there, she was fabulous & fun. tasting local prosecco, having delicious lunch at a family farm, the gorgeous hills, views and small towns/villages, vineyards. you'll love it. dress warm, i'm sure weather will be cool up there

My wife and I spent two nights in Bassano del Grappa last June, at the tail end of six weeks in Italy. We chose it mostly because it was just an hour’s drive to Venice airport for our flight home, but we really loved the place. Beautiful views from the covered bridge looking along the river towards the mountains, a 12th century castle, the grappa museum and a couple of quaint piazzas were the highlights for us. It also had some of the lowest prices in restaurants that we encountered in all of Italy.

Yes, well worth your time! I would love to go back, as the bridge was being worked on while I was there so my only "iconic views" are from others' photos:). Had a great lunch, tasted grappa, and just enjoyed meandering around the town.

I stayed in Bassano del Grappa for 2 nights and enjoyed visiting the Hemingway Museum, not far from the central plaza. WWII history in this area is very interesting and sobering, as the fighting took place in the Monte Grappa massif mountains. Hauling up artillery, using donkeys, and hiding in caves gave me a different perspective on the war. Most of the displays and videos are in Italian; however, in 1918, the villa was the residence of Section One of the American Red Cross ambulances. One of the volunteer drivers was Ernest Hemingway. The museum is walking distance from the bridge.

Bassano del grappa is a very cute town and nearby is also Marostica which has a square with a life-size chess set. It's been a long time since I was there but I have great memories- highly recommend.
