Basillacata

I will be in Italy in May. I plan to visit Basillicata for one week and will have a rental car. I would appreciate all advice re the area!

Have you googled "Basilicata tourism" for info? (Note the spelling.) It's not a region very commonly visited by Americans so don't be too disappointed if you don't get many responses here.

Best of luck.

Matera is an absolute must! I have been to Italy 3x and Matera stands out as one of my favorite cities. The sassi (cave and stone houses) are incredible. Wander around the two different sassi districts that are accessible from the center of Matera, but also drive out of town following signs for "Chiese Rupestri" for an incredible view of the city (especially at dusk).

For me, Matera has one of the best passaggiata in Italy - the evening stroll and gathering in the center of town. Perfect time for a gelato.

Perhaps taboo to mention here, but since Rick's guides don't cover the area I'll suggest it anyway... Lonely Planet has a guide to Puglia and Basilicata that I found quite useful.

I agree with the previous post. Matera is a MUST SEE. I stayed in the Hotel Sassi (with caves for some of the rooms.) I enjoyed riding around in the area and it is close to the Trulli (sp?) houses and they are also very interesting.
