We are planning a 3 week trip to Southern Italy in mid April to include Puglia ( Bari
Monopoli, Lecce, Matera as our bases) and Campania ( to include Naples, Pompei and possibly Ischia) I have not really given any consideration to Basilicata outside of Matera but it seems to be very beautiful. Can anyone give me some information about the area including how to get around both by car and public transportation? And where would a good base be in addition to Matera.
Thank you
If you've only got three weeks including Campania I wouldn't take time from Puglia to visit Basilicata. If you are driving you could stop at Pietrapertosa or Castelmezzano on the way from Campania to Puglia, or otherwise Tursi/Craco etc https://slowtravelitalyspain.blogspot.com/2022/12/basilicata-craco-and-tursi.html
Or Irsina and Miglionico make a good day trip from Matera.
But there's a lot to see in Puglia. Bari makes a good base if you're planning to use public transport, especially the train up and down the coast but not if you want to use the car for day trips because it's a large city and you'll waste a lot of time getting in and out....In that case Trani (my favourite place https://slowtravelitalyspain.blogspot.com/2023/04/why-i-love-trani.html) or Giovinazzo could be good alternatives
Thank you!
