Advice please on how to best to plan for the dome climb in the Basilica in September. I have a reservation for the Vatican Gardens and Museum tour on a Thursday at 9:00 and Necropolis tour at 11:00 on Friday. (Necropolis tour includes a discount on the climb with lift.)
If you get there when it opens (7:30 or 8?)
You could climb on Friday before Necropolis tour I suppose- unless you don’t have that discount ticket in hand til after the tour
I’d want to do it early as it is hot and claustrophobic so you won’t have time before Vatican tour
Climb it whenever you get there. The lift, for which there may be a lineup, takes you about 40% of the way up.
By all means, take the elevator part of the way up. Then you’ll be able to do other things the rest of the day!
just bought my ticket day of and there was not wait (in 2019); was easy to purchase a ticket and then took my time to climb to the top; stopped part of the way up to go to the gift shop. it is very tight/claustrophobic but the view was worth it; very unique experience
