Hi, I’m sure I’ve read very post here trying to find advice on my itinerary. Perhaps it’s not workable but would appreciate any advice.
We’re leaving Basel 28 June by train, looking to stay Verbania or somewhere similar for 2-3 nights, then onto Verona 2-3 nights. Flying out late on 4 July.
Have chosen Lago Maggiore as I think it might be still possible to avoid the heaving crowds of tourists there, so if Verbania is not it then I’d welcome advice on an alternative.
Also our planned route by train would be Basel to Locarno then ferry to Verbania or perhaps bus., anyone got an opinion on that? We will have travelled far from home (NZ), so our suitcases won’t be light.
Then the trip to Verona is huge (and when I went to look at it I wondered would we be staying on the wrong side of the lake in Verbania.) But we don’t want o stay in Stresa. We prefer to travel by train, not drive. Any advice on the best way to do the trip to Verona?
Many thanks if you’re able to help.
Why don’t you want to stay in Stresa?
Stresa would be a wonderful option. We absolutely loved it. And you can get there with just one transfer in Domodosolla. Look into Hotel du Parc.
You could go more directly to Verbania via Bern, Brig, and Domodossola. The only issue is that you will need to take a replacement bus from Domodossola to Verbania (or Stresa). Then a replacement bus from there to Milan to get a train to Verona. Otherwise, pretty easy. Or just stay in Locarno, if Swiss prices are not an issue.
Hey thanks, that’s great advice, I’ll look into going via Domodossola.
i understand Stresa is more crowded than Verbania.
I visited Verbania and Stresa on my last vacation on Lago Maggiore (May 24). I found Stresa very touristy, while Verbania was quite the opposite. The advantage of Stresa is the view of the Borromean Islands, but I had more of a "I'm really in Italy" feeling in Verbania.
