Having stayed previously in bologna ; i would like to try another part of this area and have two nights to fill. Would you recommend modena or parma and why ?
Parma and Modena are quite similar. I would rather consider Ferrara for a day and a night ..... The tourist reception is of a high standard and the city can be discovered simply by walking or riding a bicycle (Ferrara is known as the city of bikes). A city that has kept intact the medieval / Renaissance layout. The historic center with the Estensi Castle, the Duomo, Piazza del Municipio with the grand staircase, Piazza Ariostea where the Palio takes place (it's older than the Siena one) ... and the food? Tortelli with pumpkin and Pampepato a sweet with chocolate, candied fruit coffee and almonds.

I would choose Parma over Modena. Modena is wonderful, but Parma has more open, less conjested feeling. Of course, both have great food.
We really enjoyed Parma during a recent trip. We spent three nights there and took a day trip to Modena. As others have said, the food is wonderful in both places. And, both have impressive cathedrals. Parma also boasts a wonderful baptistery. Whichever you choose, it will be worth your time to visit the other as a day trip. Buon viaggio.
Parma is great. I haven't been to Modena. I just visited Ferrara for a few hours off the train last week on my way to Venice - really lovely town, wouldn't mind spending more time there in the future.
