Hello! My friend and I will be ending a RS tour (Venice, Rome, Tuscany, etc) the first part of May. We have an additional twelve nights in Italy after the tour ends. Since the tour is northern we would like to explore more of mid and southern (but probably not as far as Sicily as she has already been there) Italy. We are looking to maybe split the twelve nights into two or three places and take day trips to other areas. I was thinking maybe Lecce and Sorrento, but would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!
12 nights would be perfect for Puglia. Do some research on the region. You could probably split it in 3 location or at least two. Which ones depends on the overall itinerary.
Sorrento and the peninsula is a good choice for 4 to 6 nights. But the area has become very crowded and expensive in recent years
If you are interested in the Amalfi/Sorrento area, consider staying in Salerno. Its a fun city with a gorgeous old town and cathedral, and much less busy. Easy transportation into Amalfi Coast area, we visited some of the smaller towns, though for us, Amalfi City and Ravello are don't miss. Hotel Plaza was great with a nice breakfast and across the street from the train/bus station and on the main tourist drag.
We really enjoyed a few nights in both Alberobello and Matera. Staying in a cliff dwelling and a trulli are don't miss, my opinion.
Consider staying in Lecce, wonderful city with baroque churches. Further north, bases might be Polignano, Monopoli or Bari
Puglia would be perfect. If the Sorrento area calls you more, I’d do either/or. You can make a fantastic 12 day trip in either area. The crowds would keep me away from Sorrento area unless I was going especially to see Pompeii.
Thank you so much for your replies! I will check out all these areas.
