Base for the Amalfi Coast

Am planning a trip to Italy for this fall and will be spending three nights somewhere along the Amalfi coast. Have been looking at hotels all the way from Salerno to Sorrento, and everything in between, then we'll stay in that one hotel all three nights and make it our base for exploring the coast and Capri. Anyone have a suggestion for a town or hotel that would make a good base? Thanks in advance!

It was not hard to travel around and spend the night at different places. Esp if you travel light. The towns are great in the evening, each one different. We atayed at the following hotels, any would be a nice base. You can see our pictures at our personal blog at: http://gadtravel.blogspot.com/

Sorrento

Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria http://www.exvitt.it/sorrento-hotel.html

Amalfi

No matter how light you pack, staying in a different place each night is exhausting.

I'd suggest basing in Positano. It has a variety of ways to get to the other parts of the Amalfi Coast and Capri. Give me an idea of your price range and I can suggest some hotels.

Mark - thanks! I'll look into these!

Doug - we'd like to keep things on the less expensive side - around 150USD/per night, give or take. Also, we're planning to take the train from Rome into Salerno and according to Trenitalia the earliest we can get in is around 1900. Might make sense for us to spend the first night there, then head down to Positano, etc the next day. Was planning on renting a car for our time on the Amalfi coast and really don't want to miss out on those amazing views on the drive from Salerno! What do you think?

Don't rent a car. Driving on the Amalfi Coast is chaotic and there's little parking. Use the bus lines and ferries to get around.

Look up the Pensione Maria Luisa in Positano as a lower priced place to stay.

"according to Trenitalia the earliest we can get in is around 1900"

You will not be able to see a full fall timetable at this time. Timetables are only available 60 days in advance. Use a date between now and the begining of June (the summer timetable comes in to force about then) to give you some idea of the full service to Salerno. The times of trains between main cities change very little so you can use the timetable to plan.

Ah - that makes sense! There are a lot more available rail times checking that way - thanks!
