Base for 5 days using public transit (train preferred) for Verona, Venice,Tuscany in Aug.

Hi. looking for a good base for family of 5 (older teens) using public transit to explore Verona, Venice (long day trip OK--kids want to see), Florence, Tuscany. We do not want to rent a car. We would be flying from CPH in early Aug. I was thinking maybe a smaller town near along train connections near Bologna? Anyone have a recommendation of either a town/great hotel/agritourism/converted castle/villa, etc.. I could also fly into VCE, spend 1 night and then head out the next day, so as not back-tracking, plus there are good flights to VCE. We are fine with 2 rooms, family suite, and VRBO, but not comfortable with airbnb. thanks, Elaine

Most agriturismi are out in the country, so a car is the best solution. I would base in Bologna and make daytrips from there, if you want to have only one base.

If you have 5 nights, I think flying into Venice is a very good idea. Spend two nights then go to Florence. Leave Venice as early as possible and stop in Verona for a few hours, then on to Florence. You can take a day trip to Chianti from there. Tours By Roberto does a great job. Are you flying out after this brief stay? Avoid backtracking and do so out or Florence.

If you only have 4 nights, stay in Florence and concentrate on Florence with a day trip to Chianti. You could go to Venice for a day, but I think it is a stretch and not a great use of time just to say you've been there.
