We will be flying into Florence, staying for three days then off to a time share near Assisi for 7 days. Finishing in Rome for three days. We will have a car. Any suggestestions for days trips from Assisi would be appreciated!!
My first choice for a day trip from Assisi would be Gubbio. We also enjoyed Spello, which is closer and visited Bavagna, which we also liked, on the same day.
Any guide book will list plenty of towns in easy driving distance; read thru them to see which have attractions which you might be interested in. There is a book "Daytrips Italy" by Steinbicker that is specifically about day trips with detailed descriptions of how to get to various places and what to do there.
I agree with Gubbio. Also would make sure to visit Perugia, Cortona and Urbino
I used Assisi as a base for day trips by car last year. I combined Gubbio and Urbino, but that felt a bit rushed. With a week, I'd do them separately as both were worth more time than combining them allowed. I also combined the small hill towns of Spello, Bevagna and Montefalco in one day, and that worked well because of the short distances between them. Todi and Cortona are also good day trips from Assisi. I skipped Deruta because I had previously been there, but it's a nice little town. I used the Rough Guide to Tuscany & Umbria to supplement Rick's guidebook, as it covers many additional towns in the region. You don't say when you're going, but if your week near Assisi is mid-May, plan to attend the Festa dei Ceri in Gubbio, held every May 15 for the past 700+ years.
Gubbio is great. If you want a great piece of Italian pottery, try Deruta which is close to both Assisi and Perugia.
