Bari to Sorrento, Train or Car?

Hello, My husband and I will be arriving in Bari via their overnight ferry from Dubrovnik. Our plan is to stay in Sorrento for two nights before heading to Civitavecchia to spend the night prior to taking a transatlantic cruise back to the states. I'm interested in ideas regarding taking a train vs renting a car. We will probably not be using the rental car for our full day in Sorrento since we have an arranged tour planned.

I believe all trains from Bari to Naples require a change and bus will be faster. If you can find a good rate for a one way rental with a drop off at NAP, I'd try that. If the trip is soon, I would not want to drive past Salerno or Naples airport due to traffic.

Hi Suki, What are your recommendations for Bari? Are you talking about just visiting for a few hours or allowing an overnight stay?

I would likely opt for the train, I do not see much advantage in a car, you just need transportation and given the trouble of a drop-off, then getting the rest of the way to Sorrento, even with a couple connections, train is easier.

For the train, I would look for one that connects in Caserta, also a train stopping at either Napoli Centrale or Napoli Piazza Garibaldi will work, the stations are basically connected, and from there you will catch the Cicumvesuvia to Sorrento.

Since the overnight ferry doesn't arrive in Bari until 8:00am, traveling by train to Sorrento won't get you there until after 6:00pm. Since you only have 2 nights in Sorrento, I would rent a car and drive, allowing for an early afternoon arrival.

Bari- At least stay during the day to tour the Old Town, St. Nicholas Cathedral where the saint’s relics are interred( Santa Claus.) it is a place of pilgrimage for Orthodox Russians. The main sanctuary is Roman Catholic and the Crypt area is Orthodox, very interesting. Walk through the old streets, see women making orricchette pasta.
Puglia is an under visited jewel but that is changing.
