My wife and I will arrive to Bari, Italy on a ferry from Dubrovnik, Croatia late on a Sat. night. We catch a train to Rome the next morning, and we're looking for a good place to spend the night. (5-15 minutes walk to the train station would be ideal.)
Eric, I cannot recommend a place to stay, because we purposely stay out of Bari because of the petty crime. It is supposed to be especially bad at night, so it would be a good idea to "cab it" to your hotel, or take bus #20 to the area around the train station.
You did not say what you wanted to spend, or what class hotel you are looking for. We used our Lonely Planet guide book for our recent trip to Puglia, and it was usually "right on the money". On the low side they recommend the Pensione Giulia, near the train station, 60 to 70E/nite. On the upper side, they recommend the Hotel Adria (adriahotelbari.com) $80 -120 E /nite.
I read a post in a Puglia forum in "Trip Advisor.com" about a hotel that someone enjoyed, but they also said that petty crime was an issue. Also, go to TA and look up "FLAvour" on the Rome forum. She grew up in Bari, and gives great advice if you send her a personal message.
Actually, for 1 night, any place should be fine, even in Bari!
