Has anyone been to Bari and is there anything remarkable about it? My dad was stationed there during the last days of WWII so I thought I might make a stop on my next visit. Any other WWII historical sites would be of interest also although I know Italy's aren't as famous as those in some other European countries. I'd just like to honor his memory by making a mini-pilgrimage. He was in the Army Air Corps and was shot down over what was then Yugoslavia. He was at one point picked up by Italian partisans, saw Musolini hanging from a tree after he was executed, was picked up by British Forces and signed as the American military witness in the surrender of German troops before being given a ride back to US Forces by the British. And he was 19 at the time. We didn't know any of this until he was in his late 70s since he never thought it was right to in any way glamorize war or his participation in it. So I'd like to take some time to stop and honor him and all those other young men who risked, or lost, their lives in Italy. By the way, he once told me that Florence was the most beautiful city he ever saw and I have to say I agree with him.
Teena, Sorry, I can't help as I haven't been to Bari yet, but I just had to say that I think your story's beautiful and I think it's great you are trying to honor him on your trip. My grandfather was also stationed somewhere in Italy, was a (Jewish) Nazi POW and won multiple Purple Hearts...That country has since completely stolen my heart and I wish I knew where he had been there so that I could also try to honor him. I hope someone has an answer for you and I wish you the best of luck!!
I wouldn't say its a remarkable city, but it has a preserved old town and a few blocks of shops on wide sidewalks outside of that. It is a big port city. It also has a rep for some crime, esp. car theft; we didn't have any problems, though.
There are cemeteries for American troops (soldiers, nurses, etc.) all over Europe - visiting any of them is a great way to honor the people who sacrificed their lives in the war. Start here: http://www.abmc.gov/cemeteries/cemeteries.php
The cemetery just outside of Florence is an amazing place to visit. I have been there for Memorial day services - it is quite and experience.
