Would like spend time in Bari. Is the train station in town, Is it a good town to train travel, day trips? I’ve stayed in Lucca and Bologna and they are great train towns, that’s what I’m looking for.
Thanks

Google maps will show you where the train station is
We based in Bari in Sept '23 for four days. Train station is in center of the town & very busy. It's easy to take day trips along the coast, Monopoli, Poligano etc.. Otranto, Ostuni, Gallipoli, Locorotundo & Alberobello are also easy. We also stayed in Lecce for 4 nights. Inland travel can be little more complicated, eg. we took the bus to Matera from Bari bus station, which is behind the train station. Puglia is a wonderful destination & off season not too touristy. Much as we enjoyed Bari, the seafood restaurants are fabulous, we preferred Lecce. It's an area that we will return to ....so much more to see.
Just a note, much as Alberobello, is spectacular, it's a tourist trap, with 000's of tourists, we only stayed 60 minutes. On the other hand, Matera is truly amazing, one of our best day trips. Happy travels!
Yes, Bari Centrale is in the city. I stayed in Bari Vecchio - the old center, and it’s an easy, flat walk to that neighborhood.
I took the bus from Bari over to Alberobello to stay overnight there. I enjoyed Alberobello and have reserved the same trullo for another overnight there next May.
Cities along the coast are easy to reach from Bari, I.e. Polignano a Mare, Trani, etc.
We loved our trip to Polignano a Mare and Lecce. The one day trip we took was to Matera which we did not care for at all!
There are actually several companies working out of the main station in Bari. Trenitalia services long distance trains (direction Rome and Bologna), trains along the coast and to Taranto and destinations further south.
Ferrovie del sud Est (FSE) leave from the last couple of tracks at Bari centrale (opposite the main building), with commuter lines to Putignano, Alberobello and beyond.
Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL) run commuter narrow gauge lines to Gravina and Matera (often with a change in Altamura). They use a separate elevated station on a side of the Trenitalia one.
Both FAL and FSE services are slow and mainly geared to students and commuters, often buses run by the same companies may be faster. Services severely reduced (if any) on Sundays.
There is a third railway company, Ferrotramviaria, leaving from an underground station under the FAL one. Commuter trains to Andria and Barletta and, more important, to Bari airport.
