Bargain Accommodation in Milan

I am looking to plan my first trip to Milan - it will be a weekend trip at the end of this month. My searching of the forum was rather inconclusive (particularly tedious is that the results are not sorted by date) with regard to finding bargain accommodation. I am wondering if anyone who has been to Milan recently can recommend places that are very inexpensive. I have especially had difficulty finding information on convents/monasteries in Milan that might rent out rooms. My wish list is: - Air conditioning - Free wifi (though I will pay if I have to and if it is reasonable)
- Private bathroom - Fairly central location I know that "inexpensive" is a relative term. I am looking for the lowest price possible that fulfills as many of my wishlist items as possible. I have been looking on Booking.com, Venere.com, etc., but nothing beats a personal recommendation. If anyone has any recommendations, I would be most grateful!

We always stay at Hotel Berna on Via Napo Torriano 18, which is about 400 meters from Stazione Centrale. We have stayed here for years, but this is not a "bargain" accommodation. Wanting the amenities you require may not be found in a "bargain" establishment. A suggestion would be to define bargain in either dollars or euros. Keep in mind that bargain may mean different things to different people. Also, try looking on tripadvisor.com and click in your dollar amounts or amenity requirements and then you will have some choices. Buon viaggio,

I "second" the hotel Berna, but there are several very nice hotels very close to the main train station. This is also close to metro stops and buses.

I will be staying at the monastery hostel in Milan in September. Unfortunately, I don't have first hand experience yet on it. It might at least be worth a passing look if you have not checked it out.

Thanks for the recommendation on Hotel Berna. Funny, I went to their site, did a search, and they had a spectacular weekend rate (€165 for 3 nights with prepayment) -- great rate for a four star hotel. I went through the whole process and got to the final "PAY" button and then the room was no longer available. Re-did the search and it doesn't come up anymore. I guess someone else had the same idea and paid before I did! I might try a different weekend so that I can stay there, it looks great and if they have that deal available on other weekends, it really can't be beat.

Incidentally, this deal did not show up at all on Booking.com. Lesson learned: always double-check the hotel's web site to see if they offer a lower rate that does not come up on the aggregator sites!

In the past, I've had good luck with hostelworld.com. They have other accommodations - not just hostels.

Try the Marconi. It is nice and not very expensive. It is also within walking distance of the cathedral and close to Centrale.
