Planning a 15 day trip to Barcelona and Sardinia end of August 2019. I will stay 5 days in Barcelona and feel I can manage that itinerary. I need help with the 10 days in Sardinia. We love beaches, local towns, FOOD/WINE and some hiking activity.
I was thinking landing in Cagliari and flying home from Olbia. SOunds like we need to rent a car to find the hidden gems.
Does anyone have an itinerary going South east to North east?
To truly enjoy Sardinia I feel a car is an absolute necessity. 2 years ago I flew into Càgliari, rented a car and then drove to an agriturismo in Castiadas and it was easy to explore the southeast coast with some beautiful beaches. Come to think of it, any place you go in Sardinia had great beaches. After 2 nights there, I spent a night in Orosei after meandering up the coast. Next stop was another agriturismo east of Arzechena. Very easy to do a day trip to the Maddelena Archipelago and visit some Nuraghes. Then a night in Santa Teresa Gallura after visiting Capo Testa. Next morning I took the first ferry north to Corsica and drove around there for 4 days (Fantastic!) before returning to Santa Teresa in the early evening. Drove to Alghero where I spent the night. Great visit to the Grotto da Nettuno! Then down the coast road for a night in Oristano. Great visit to see the Roman ruins of Tharos on the Sinis Peninsula. Then the drive back to Càgliari. On the way I detoured to the Nuraghe di Barumini - don’t miss it. Returned the car at the the airport and then took train to town to explore the sights in Càgliari for two days. It actually costs more to return the rental to the inconvenient city office than the airport.
Hiking? Though I didn’t do any, there are great trails all over the island. In Càgliari I had an excellent dinner at Sa Domu Sarda, Via Sassari 51 next to the very nice Hotel Flora. The restaurant specializes in local Sardinian dishes. If you go to Alghero, have a pizza at OK Pizza, worth the short walk from wherever you are. Make sure to order some grappa after the pie! There are a number of great seafood restaurants on the sea wall near the cathedral and all of them serve fresh seafood. I had a great lunch on the ocean front terrace of Miques de Mirali. Oristano is my small town choice. Great B&B called Sa Domu e Crakeras. Inexpensive, free parking, nice owner. Short walk to the restaurant he recommended for dinner. A number of his guests were there and we were all very happy with the quality and very funny owner. Trattoria Portixedda.
If you want any more info, PM me. Consider a few days in Corsica. I really want to go back and visit both islands again.
