I'm flying to Milan, taking the train to Verona, changing trains to go to Bolzano, and hoping to catch a bus to Val Gardena before doing some serious hiking. Sounds like I'll be tired before I even get started! Is it better to spend the night in Verona or Bolzano on the way and do a bit of sight seeing? Or should I keep on to my hotel in Santa Cristina and take it easy the first day in the mountains?
I like to get to my first destination before collapsing. :-) Actually, assuming you arrive in the morning, the travel will either allow you to nap or keep you stimulated until a normal bed time, each of which will help you recover. I am not a fan of sleeping upon arrival, but a little nap on a train or bus can do you wonders. Just don't miss your stop! By the time you get to Santa Cristina, you can shower, unpack, take a walk, have dinner, then a good long sleep so that hopefully by 06:00 the next day you are ready to enjoy the Val Gardena!
Do check on the bus schedule from Bolzano to S.C. Ask your hotel how late they run, but I think it's pretty late.
