Baggage Storage in Airbnb’s

Next week I will be staying at a few Airbnb’s in Rome, Florence, and Sorrento. I know when I stay at a hotel they let you store your luggage there until your room is ready. I’ve never stayed at an Airbnb before and was wondering if the same courtesy applies. I’m a little concerned about having to carry my luggage through town if I arrive early to a city. Thanks very much.

You can always check with each owner, but this can be more complicated because the place will hopefully be getting cleaned if it was previously occupied. There are usually storage places near train or bus stations if not IN those stations.

rarely can you leave bags at an airbnb before or after your check in/out. There might be an exception; sometimes they will let you leave a bag while the cleaner is working but usually you have to make other arrangements. There are baggage storage services in all major cities -- some at the train stations. Florence SMN for example has a left luggage. There are also various private concerns that will stow luggage.

One more reason we avoid AirBnB and stay in hotels...among other reasons we no longer stay in rentals.

You should have had this conversation with the owner before making the booking.

Good luck.

We have stayed in many AirBnb and VRBO apartments. Generally, if the previous renter has vacated and the cleaner is in the apartment, we have been able to leave our luggage and go about our day. We have also been able to leave our luggage if our flight/train was later in the day/evening. We always check with management/the owner prior to arriving/departing to receive permission. Only once did we have to use a luggage-storage which, while a bit strange, worked well. Obviously, it's simpler to stay in a hotel if you need to leave luggage, but we like the perks of apartments.

Thank you all very much. I agree, this is something I should have considered when making the reservations. As it is my first time withan Airbnb it didn't cross my mind. Thanks for the information about the baggage storage services. I will see if I can find their locations before I leave.

It never hurts to ask. There is no blanket answer, as each place and each circumstance can be different.

Our experience with two apartments in Rome was that it was at least a minor inconvenience - and with hosts that were generally cooperative.

Our flight had arrived to FCO early, and we were outside the apt way in advance of the scheduled time. When we reached the host, she was tied up and couldn't make it much before the appointed time. So we camped with luggage at a sidewalk table at Giolitti and had overpriced ice cream and coffee.

For the second apt in Trastevere later in the trip, the host was just a bit late. But for our departure day, while the host did allow us to leave our bags, it was while a handyman was working there - we had to return at a specified time to retrieve our bags.

Note that this location had rather draconian requirements for cleaning when we left - we had to schlep all of our trash, separated according to rather vague requirements based on category - a rather long distance to the community trash/recycling bins.

For the reasons cited above, plus the excellent breakfasts we had at a hotel in Lucca, I'm back in the hotel camp.

I've rented ski condos for decades, and have enjoyed the use of a timeshare in San Franciso, so well aware of the advantages of an apartment for longer stays - but those were all professionally managed.

Every AirBnB is different because AirBnB is a platform for connecting guests with hosts, not a company that rents apartments. Each host operates differently. I am an AirBnB host, and my guests get different responses re: early check-in or bag storage depending on the particular circumstances of their arrival day. You should message the host as soon as you know your schedule and ask whether early check-in or bag storage is available. I recently stayed in Belfast, arriving late morning. I messaged the host re: bag drop, and he offered early check-in (even blocked the night before our arrival at no cost). He got a great review.

The last time I used AirBnB 8 years ago, I did the same for a high end townhouse in London, but I worked all of it out with the owner prior to making the booking - he blocked out the prior night for us. We had the dreaded 7 am arrival at LHR, were standing at the front door of the rental at 9 am, and the owner who lived nearby greeted us with the keys.

The key is to make that "deal" prior to booking.
