Has anyone checked in baggage at the train station? Is it safe? What is the approximate cost?
Yvonne,
I've never had occasion to check baggage at Firenze SMN, but I'm sure it's "safe". This provides information - http://www.grandistazioni.it/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=86470fc45fa4b110VgnVCM1000003f16f90aRCRD
Be sure to allow lots of time to drop off and pick up luggage as there may be a queue at peak times. Also be sure to note their open & closing hours.
Yes. Done it. Manned baggage room so no coins, lockers, codes, keys.
I can't speak for SMN specifically, but we checked bags in Pisa while we went to see the tower. This was last month. We checked one suitcase and 2 backpacks. I think it was somewhere in the ballpark of 30 Euros total.
The luggage storage was a room with an attendant behind the counter. No lockers or anything -- he did everything. It was safe.
I would imagine it's the same setup and similar price at SMN!
Very safe. You will be ID'd and you will need to show your passport to the attendant when you leave the luggage and when you retrieve it. So no chance that someone else will retrieve your luggage on your behalf. In Florence it's located at platform 16, right next to the railway police office (another reason for thieves to stay away).
It's not cheap. It's a flat 6€ for each piece of luggage, no matter how small, up to an initial period of 5 hours. After that initial period, you will be charged 0.90€ for each additional hour beyond the initial 5 hours. It's open until 11pm so don't be late or you will need to pick up the next day at 6am.
We did this last year and it was indeed easy. The office is on the north side after you walk in to the train platforms - it faces the trains.
We just didn't leave much time to get our bags before our train ! And of course there was a line of customers....
Give yourself some time in case the baggage office is busy !
