Baggage Safe with Hotel Desk Staff? - Rome

We will be leaving Rome for one day for a hurried day trip to Pompeii. Rather than lug our 3 carry-ons with us, we intend to leave our baggage in Rome where we will return to sleep that night. Since we will leave Termini early in the morning by train - too early to check into a hotel - we intend to leave our suitcases (no tech, jewelry, cash, docs, etc) with front desk of a R.S. recommended hotel near Termini and return to checking and sleep there that night before flight back to States.

What do you think? Would you leave bags sans valuables with desk staff?

I would and I have. Of course, the hotel is not responsible for left luggage.

I would do it. The other option would be to store your bags at Termini, but that's probably only minimally safer (if so) than the hotel. There is some amount of risk to it of course, but I think you'll be fine with the hotel.

They are probably safer with the hotel desk than taking them with you. However you might be able to have an early check in also if they have a room clean and ready. But I wouldn't think twice about leaving luggage with the hotel desk. I've done it so many times I can't even count.
