Has anyone used the baggage porters at St.Marks Vaporeto stop? If youv'e used it let me know how it worked out? A friend told me he saw people using them. Apperantly for a fee they take your bags to the hotel. I don't remember reading about this service on Rick's books.
If they are there, it's a private venture... and I'd sure keep an eye on my luggage and both hands on my wallet! I've never seen "porters" at any Vaparetto stop in Venice. If you take a water taxi to a hotel dock, then yes the hotel staff will assist you. But vaparettos are water buses.... and I've never seen porters at any bus stop in Italy?
A couple from the group I was traveling with recently used porters from the vaporeto stop (or just dudes trying to make an extra buck... asmI'm not sure how formal their "job" is.). I can't speak as to cost or service, but the result worked. The bags ended up at the hotel with them as you'd expect.
As long as your bags have wheels you'll be fine. Just take your time going up and over the little foot bridges. Personally I agree with the previous poster about keeping your eyes on your bags if hand them over to an unofficial luggage porter.
I've never seen porters at any Vaporetto stop, ever. Frequently can be seen the luggage transporti boats with a whole group's luggage heading down the canals, but that's different. If anybody offered to take my luggage I'd run a mile the other way.
