I have read online that there is a baggage handlers strike scheduled in all of Italy on May 14th. We are flying into Rome for a cruise leaving the same day. Does anyone have any additional information? Has anyone flown during a baggage handlers strike before? I have read everything from cancelled flights to re-routing to Florence. In addition, it we miss our ship we need to get to Messina in Sicily ASAP. Any suggestions?
This is our first trip to Europe and I have been planning for one year. I know this type of thing happens often, I just wish it was not on the first day of my first trip!
Jennifer,
Thanks for posting! I'm also scheduled to arrive at FCO on May 14th. Between strikes and the volcano, travel this year is somewhat "challenging".
Have a look at This for further information.
Jennifer,
One thing I noticed in reading the web site, is that the wording indicates they "might be on strike". That doesn't sound like it's too definite, however having seen the way things work in Italy, I'll assume the strike is going to take place.
One other point is that the strike is only scheduled to last eight hours.
Good luck!
Thanks I hadn't been to that website yet. I have been trying to call United but they claim they don't know anything about the strike. Others on our cruise flying Delta, KLM and Continetal have gotten better responses and even gotten their flights changed to Wed, for no charge. British Airways is telling people that they bring in other handlers during strikes. I wish I could get more info from United.
