Baggage check at Naples train station?

Rick Steves book of 2008 says there is a baggage check at Naples train station and at the Archeological Museum. Has anyone used it and is it a safe place to leave our luggage while we see the museum. Our travel agent says Naples is not safe and there is no baggage check and we should take a private tour, comments????

I can't speak for the archeolocial museum in Naples, but some of the nice museums will have staffed counters where you will be required to leave large backpacks and luggage. Most often you keep your purse and cameras.

I'm a bit suspicious of the travel agent going for the private tour.

Check your luggage at the Naples train station baggage hold whilst you visit Naples and the Archeological Museum!!

Does your travel agent get a commission for selling the tour? Just wondering. In any event, there is baggage check at the Naples train station. Look for the sign saying "Deposito Bagagli" We used it 2 years back and it was fine, no problem at all.

p.s. did the travel agent sell you a railpass?

We used the baggage check at the Naples train station in September 2009. We felt pretty safe leaving our bags there for several hours. The attendant took a photocopy of my passport that he kept with the bags to identify us at pick up. The bags were not under lock and key so I would keep any important valuables on you. The attendant didn't speak any English but in my broken Italian I figured out that he was asking us how long we planned to leave the bags. I think it ended up being 9 euros for 2 bags and was very convenient for our short self guided tour of Naples. You can easily find the Archeology Museum on your own using Rick's directions.

Is the baggage check easy to find?

Yes, the baggage check is easy to find. As Mike said, just follow the signs for "Deposito Bagagli". As you get off the train and are walking toward the front doors of the station, the baggage check will be to the right. The station is not very big when compared to the Termini Station in Rome.
