Bag Size to Take into Colosseum and other attractions

I've been seeing warnings about not trying to take backpacks or large bags into the major attractions in Italy. It just says not to take a large bag. I don't know what they consider a large bag. I always travel with a packable backpack that is my day bag to hold water and any layers/rain gear needed for the day. It sounds like this won't work. Does anyone know what sized bags are permissible. I have to put something in my luggage and I don't know what.

Thanks in advance.

A typical daypack is fine; a backpack like you are heading into the wilderness is not. They don’t want rolling suitcases straight from airport baggage claim, either. We have found a messenger-type bag or something the size of Rick Steves’ Civita bag is fine most places.

Hi.

My trips to Italy, I have used a Kipling 14-inch tote bag / crossbody purse.
No issues.

I've also seen travelers carrying a smallish messenger-type bag.

Some attractions do not allow backpacks.

But? Maybe if a backpack is small, soft nylon, not fully packed, and can be worn on the front or on shoulder in attractions, perhaps security would allow. It is their call.

The Borghese Gallery states that it does not allow bags. But, there have been people who report they have worn a very small crossbody bag for absolute essentials and were not questioned.

Your packable backpack "seems to be okay" because it is not like a campus backpack.

We were just there the other day and many people had small daypacks.
