Bad News if You like AC

I just read a news article from Italy that said there are new rules to limit air conditioning in public building and schools to 25C or about 77F. These limits are being put in place to help make Italy less dependent upon Russian Natural Gas.

No word yet on how this will affect private buildings like hotels.

I'll happily forgo a little comfort to cut the use of the gas. I can manage in 25 quite happily. Maybe a little fan.

I'm sure that this sort of thing will be encouraged in Germany too which is so very dependent on that gas, and they are trying to reach zero by the end of the year.

Actually the governments decree says a minimum of 27 degrees centigrade (80F) but it allows a tolerance of 2 degrees centigrade from this level before the fine is applied, therefore posing the effective limit at 25 degrees. Health care facilities are exempt from this regulation. In winter the maximum temperature allowed in public buildings will be 19 degrees (66 F). Also in this case a tolerance of 2 degrees is allowed before the fine is triggered, bringing the effective enforced temperature to 21 degrees max (70F) in winter.
The rule for now applies to public buildings only (public offices, schools, universities, etc.). Private buildings, including hotels are not included in the regulation.

Public buildings would appear to include a lot of museums, right? I suppose some might be able to get a dispensation because of the types of materials they hold, but I've been in quite a few museums in Italy that didn't seem to be air conditioned at all, so I don't think I'll notice much, if any, difference.
