We'll be in Catania in about a month and after that will be going to Rome. Currently we have a flight booked, but in the papers a few days ago it said the Catania airport was closed for a day due to Mt Etna erupting. Apparently this happens from time to time.
I'd like to figure out a plan in advance in case this happens during our travel. What alternatives do people suggest for getting to Rome? Three I can think of are
- fly from Palermo instead, it doesn't look like the Palermo airport is affected when Catania is closed like this
- take the train to Rome, although it looks like this is a full-day journey
- take a bus? Are there long-distance buses on this route?
We do need to get to Rome on a specific day because we have a flight out of Rome the following day
