Backup Cell Phone?

I just bought a new apple iphone X and am going to Italy. Question, is it safe to carry a nice phone there or would you recommend putting my SIM card in my old phone and using it for the trip just in case?

I'd prefer to take my new phone for purposes of the camera but just wondering if there were any general recommendation around this.

Thanks for any help

The new phone takes better pictures and is obviously faster than your old phone. You bought it to enjoy, so why not enjoy it? I know most of the providers offer insurance against loss or theft, so pay that amount and just be careful with the phone.

Most of your pics should upload to the Cloud when you are in an area with WiFi, so in the unlikely event that someone steals the phone, you probably have not lost much other than the actual phone, which should be insured and can be turned off and/or wiped remotely. Live large--Italy is pretty safe most of the time. Have a great trip!

I was concerned when I graduated from an iPhone 5 to the 6 plus because of its size. Never had a problem with the larger and more obvious phone. Never met anyone whose phone was stolen or attempted to be, so take beautiful pictures!

Carry it like you would outside of the area where you would not carry it in the United States.
Or don't leave it unattended anywhere in public.

As long as you exercise some reasonable precautions with your iPhone such as not leaving it sitting on restaurant tables or whatever, you shouldn't have any problems (but of course no guarantees). Don't carry it in your back pocket or the highly skilled pickpockets will "nick" it fairly quickly. Keep it in an inside pocket and out-of-sight. If you have it mounted in a case, that may "disguise" the fact that it's the newest and most expensive iPhone X.

Another point you'll have to address is the cost for roaming in Europe with your home cell network. Which network are you with?

Thanks for your replies

I have ATT and they have a 10 per day charge that allows me to leverage my unlimited plan. Not a bad option

I'd probably take both phones and buy a SIM card in Italy for the old phone - and use the iPhone to take pictures. Just make sure you get AT&T to unlock the old phone first (should be free to unlock assuming you paid it off). AT&T's $10/day plan is kind of pricey. I've found I need data everywhere in Europe for the on-the-fly walking and public transit directions. The "easy to find free WiFi all over the place" argument people make is completely irrelevant for that, probably my biggest use of my smart phone (for the navigation) when I travel.

You might check with AT&T as there might be a cap on the $10 / day charges (ie: 10 days, so after you've paid $100 there would be no further daily charges). My network uses a system like that.

If you're going to be sending photos or other things that use a lot of data, I'd recommend waiting until you have Wi-Fi available so that you don't use up your cellular data allotment.

Take your X and use ATT's data plan. You'll use it more on your trip than you may think.
