backpacks in the vatican museum

There was a bag check desk, but we were not required to check our backpack (daypack size)

This depends on the size of your backpack, how small is it?

It's just a "normal" size backpack. You see them on every college student. When it is packed full the dimensions are. 21" X 16" X 12" give or take.

Cloakroom - visitors are asked to check-in bags, backpacks or bulky luggage.

Sounds like it is more likely than not that you will be asked to check it.

Some Italian museums are especially sensitive about this issue, ever since the catastrophic bombing of the Uffizi some years ago.
