I’m confused about the bag policy at the Colosseum. Can you bring in backpacks or are they not permitted?

I brought a backpack in with no trouble (my sunscreen did get confiscated though). My backpack is small though, 14 inches high by 10 inches wide. And it wasn't overstuffed, especially after they took my sunscreen :). My son also had a drawstring backpack with water bottles that he brought in with no problem.
