Backpacks

I know this question has been asked before but can you bring normal size backpacks, not the hiker size, into the Colloseum and the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel? If not is there lockers that you can store them in safely while you are visiting? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

I was just there and had no problems. My backpack is a Columbia Beacon. Remember to buy your ticket at Palatine Hill. Never wait in line.

My best advice- don't bring a backpack to the Vatican Museum (which leads to the Sistine Chapel).

There are lockers but then you'd have to return to claim it. This could take some time and effort. If at all possible, don't do it!

Nik brings up an unrelated but important point about the Forum Area. Buy your ticket on the hill!

And backpacks were not an issue there. The crowds.... well that is another issue.

The official rules for the colosseum, forum and palatine hill are that backpacks are not allowed. The guards seem to be letting some in but just remember, they can deny you entry if you bring one. It would be best just to leave your backpack in your hotel. You can bring a small cross body bag without issue.

The Vatican museums has size limitations for backpacks. Also, you are not allowed to wear them on your back. You must carry them on your shoulder, like a purse.

As for tickets for the colosseum combo or the Vatican museums, just purchase them online. Vatican tickets are timed but colosseum tickets are valid at any time or date before the end of the year. You can print full priced tickets at home to take with you.

Why buy tickets on the 'hill' when you can get them online? And if you want to do tours like the underground and third ring then good luck getting them on the day.
