Does anyone know if jarred baby food is easy to find in grocery shops in Rome, Florence and Venice? Just curious if I need to bring my own jars.
Any supermarket will have baby food. Even pharmacies carry baby food if you are in a pinch. Both also have all different brands and types of baby food, as well as diapers, diaper cream, shampoo, bottles, pacifiers, bibs, anything your baby could possibly need.
Most restaurants are more than happy to heat the jars up for you, or bring you hot water to heat it up in, as well as spoons or whatever else you might need.
We were in Rome and Montalcino last July and had no problem finding jars of baby food anywhere. That being said, most of the jars were of the meat variety with very little fruits and vegetables. The pictures on the jars indicate what is inside, including pictures of pig, cow, chicken, fish...and even rabbit and horse! If you don't believe me I'll be happy to send you a picture of the picture of the horse baby food jar. (I couldn't resist and snapped a picture in the grocery store.) The best thing was yogurt in baby food jars; sometimes mixed with fruit. I would bring a few of vegetables.
Yes, they do have horse and rabbit, but also chicken, turkey, beef, veal, and they have those ready meals where everything has been added. My children ate Italian baby food quite well, it was the stuff we bought in America that they refused!
ps-If they have a good selection, they will have fruits and vegetables as well. So not worth hauling that extra weight over in your suitcase, just take a few extra for the plane and for arrival and you will be fine. If there was ever a country that would do anything for a baby, it's italy.
Is your baby eating solids and table foods. You can find lots of items in gorcery stores, we found our daughter who was almost one at the time like the pear juice (succo di pera)as we could not really find apple juice. We also would get her panzoritti snacks at McDonald's from time to time. We brought some cheerios with us and she snacked on these on our trip. We also brought snack traps for the cheerios. You may also get help feding the baby. One day we were waiting for our boat at the Tiber and we were feeding our daughter a yogurt or pear snack and an old lady came up took the food and feed it to her.
