B&B safety?

I will be staying at a B&B in Cannaregio area of Venice. Now the B&B states they have a safety deposit box in the lobby. My question is how safe is it. Would I be better off keeping all my important items (passport, Credit card) with me or having the inn the innkeepers put them in this box?

It is what ever you are most comfortable with. We are more comfortable having our passports, cc, and extra money with us at all time in a money belt. Others prefer not have a money belt and use the hotel safe. The is no absolute answer to your question. It is whatever works best for you.

I, like Frank, keep all that important stuff with me in my money belt all the time. I am sure that you will find other folks that always check that stuff in at their hotel or B&B. Again, personal preference.

I prefer to have as little on me as possible as I walk around during the day (document-wise, that is); otherwise I'm constantly checking "do I still have my passport," etc. I'll have a driver's license with me for ID and a debit or credit card; everything else stays at the hotel.

I thing I worry about more, though, is checking out of the hotel and leaving town retrieving everything from the safe.

I have left papers, money and cc in room and in safe and in money belt and have never had a problem anywhere. to be sure, always keep multiple copies of passport and at least one ATM and credit card away from others.

FWIW, you'll need your passport if you plan on using an internet cafe. And wouldn't you need your credit card with you anyway?

Venice, in particular, is known for being extremely safe.
