B&B Recommendations in Venice??

I had no idea how expensive the hotels were in Venice; the first time I went it was on a guided tour that included hotels. This time we're going on our own and are probably looking more for a B&B or Pensione. Also, what area of Venice would you recommend? Last time we were close to San Marco plaza but I'd rather venture into the less popular areas (and hopefully less expensive ones...) to get a different feel of the town. Thanks in advance!

Yes, Venice is one of the more expensive hotel areas in Europe.
For us to give more useful information, it would be helpful if you could give us an idea of the price range, in Euros, that you would consider.

Have a reservation at B&B la terrazza dei miracoli in September. Simple but has an upstairs terrace which we were looking for. Can't give a review (yet!) but the area and price are good.

We were happy staying at Pensione Guerrato, located near the Rialto bridge. The prices were pretty good for Venice. Yes, Venice is expensive.

Try looking at Cannaregio or Castello districts. I stayed at a small hotel in Canarregio last May for about $150 double with breakfast. Let me know if you want the name.

Thank you. $150 per night double occupancy would be good. What about the Dorsoduro area?

And perhaps I should add what would be a good area within easy walking distance of the train station? Or, if there's another area that's better than near the station, how would we get there?

Zoe: Yes, I'd like the name of the hotel. Thanks.

The hotel is Locanda San Marcuola, about 50 meters from the vaporetto stop San Marcuola. Old-fashioned quirky elevator, nice breakfast, a little garden in the back. It has two stone lions out front.

We stayed here in Venice in the Dorsoduro area and loved it: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/325925

The location was great -- maybe a 15 min. walk to St. Mark's Square but away from the crowds and there are still plenty of cafes and restaurants that aren't too far.

We've stayed in this place 3 times...

Just meters from the San Toma stop (so not overly far from Rialto), but quiet. We had the standard double, with private bathroom across the hall. Mid-Sept rate was about 70-75 euro. Nice little breakfast of various breads/croissants/cheese/cereal/beverages. We arrived really early one morning by overnight train and were able to come drop our bags until the room was ready, and we were able to store our bags in a locked closet after checkout when we weren't leaving until mid-afternoon, so that was a great help.

Pensione Guerrato is great. So is Casa Rezzonico, in the Dorsoduro neighborhood. Bonus: it's on side canal. Here are some photos I took of it and the surrounding area. Casa Rezzonico in May 2013

I stayed a the Gio Gio BNB which was very reasonable. It's a easy walk from St. Marks but in a quiet area at night. Also it's really close to a Vaparetto stop incase you take the water taxi anytime.

What is your timeframe, prices are seasonal? This past October I stayed at B&B Zaguri,http://www.zaguri.net, they fill up fast do to their limited amount of rooms. Cost included breakfast. Enjoyed the stay very much, under 5 min. walk from S. Maria del Giglio water taxi/bus stop. Had window facing the small canal. I have heard people talk about Pensione Academia - Villa Maravege,http://www.pensioneaccademia.it/eng/, walking distance from Accademia Stop. I'm thinking of trying this place myself during my next Venice trip.
