I will be driving south from Amsterdam through Venice (yes, a long drive) and am looking for a not-too-expensive, quaint family hotel or B&B just north of Venice for the night. Never been to Venice so I am also asking the top thing to do there since I will only have about 4 or 5 hours before driving on. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Mestre is the nearest town to Venice - its industrial, full of refineries and chemical factories so you are not likely to find quaint. But you will be able to leave your car and take the train into Venice. From Station take Vaperetto no. ! from the other side of the Grand Canal - it will take you down the Grand Canal to San Marco via Rialto etc. Wander around Piazza San Marco and then get the vapertto back to the station for your return to the Mestre. That is all you will have time to do. Better to stop in somewhere like Padua or Verona and spend some quality time in a lovely town than rush Venice - it needs a minimum of two or three days to explore some of what Venice has to offer.
