B&B (or hotel) in Sorrento with a view

Hello!!

The hubby and I are going to Italy for our 10 year anniversary :) We will be staying in Sorrento for 8 nights at the end of November (into December - We've done our research - we know it's off season) and would love recommendations on a place to stay from the experts here ;)

Our ideal location would be a B&B (or even a hotel):

-within walking distance from the center of Sorrento. We are young (early 30's) and in good shape, so we don't mind if it is a 15-20 min walk with hills.

-with a terrace or balcony with a view of the bay of naples and/or vesuvius. We know it will be chilly, but we'd still like a room with a great view and a large window (even if no terrace or balcony) to take it in.

For views, we were looking at places on via capo (which seems to be within walking distance of center of Sorrento). My husband found one hotel (Bristol) on via capo for 160 Euro/night. It's a 4-star, but we are not high maintenance and do not need a "4 star" place. We'd be more than happy with a small room if the place has charm & friendly owners whom we are likely to meet. We would love to stay in a B&B with owners who wouldn't be opposed to eating dinner & sharing stories with us a night or two (or more) :)

I would appreciate any recommendations anyone here can give.

thank you!

Sharon

I highly recommend "La Tonnarella" hotel which is in RS book. We've stayed there 3 times and love it. Right on the cliff, reasonably priced rooms, rooms with terraces and balconies (I recommend a terrace) a great restaurant, a great buffet breakfast included. Lots of terraces, flowers, friendly staff. They also have a private beach with lounge chairs, which you may not be interested in at that time of year but thought I'd mention. It's a beautiful and easy walk into town and it's very quiet. It also has free internet in each room and the atmosphere and lounges make it easy to meet other friendly travelers.

I second the vote for La Tonnarella, also on Via Capo, except the rooms are about the same price as you quoted for Hotel Bristol. And, La Tonnarella is a 3 star.

We absolutely loved La Tonnarella, too!

stupid question - what's the difference between a terrace and a balcony? I thought they were the same thing?

Checked out Tonnarella - will be closed from Oct. 26th until March 1st 2009 :( They referred us to Hotel Antiche Mura, which has GREAT reviews, but no views :(

Thanks for the recommendation! But more than that - THANK YOU for not replying with negative comments about our choice to go to Sorrento in Nov!! Anytime I ask a Sorrento question on the Frommer's board - all I get is "WHY on earth would you want to go to Sorrento in NOVEMBER?!?" It's totally opposite here on RS - even got a private msg about how great Sorrento is in November from another RS member! I wish I found ya earlier!

Sharon,

You might also have a look at Hotel Desiree in Sorrento, which is right next to the La Tonarella. It's an easy walk from there into the main part of town, and the owners were wonderful.

Also since this is your 10-year anniversary, if you want to celebrate with an incredible meal, I'd highly recommend this restaurant (depending on your dining budget).

Buon Viaggio!

I'm too lazy to go get a dictionary, but a terrace is a flat bit either on the ground or the rooftop, whereas the balcony hangs of fthe side of the building..Not a very technical/architectural descpription

I agree with Regina's definition of terrace vs. balcony. Consequently, a terrace tends to be larger than a balcony. For instance, at La Tonnarella, a terrace has sunbeds, whereas the balcony has just a small table and 2 chairs, because that's all that will fit.

We had a suite (for our family of 5) at La Tonnarella, with 2 balconies. It was glorious! I'm sorry to hear that La Tonnarella is closed, but I think that the price is the same as you were looking at for Bristol anyway.

Good luck in your quest for the perfect place to stay! It will pay off.

thank you all! Yep, we've got a good budget for food! And so many recommendations for places to eat! I know we are going to eat well when we are there! I'm confirming at Bristol, since Tonarella is closed :( Now we just hope the weather is good enough on at least one of those days (if not two!) to get over to Capri!

There are lots and lots of places in Sorrento perched on the cliff with balconies overlooking the sea. Grand Hotel Ambasciatori is where we stayed and boy do they have a view! It's easily walkable to the center, the place has very nice rooms, pools, gardens...yes it's a fancy place. However in the off season you may see some good deals. We booked via www.laterooms.co.uk and got a reasonably good deal. We ended up with 1 of only 2 rooms that had an ENORMOUS terrace hanging out right over the sea. It was quite spectacular. I posted a review with lots of pictures here http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g187782-d235953-r3551304-Grand_Hotel_Ambasciatori-Sorrento_Campania.html
